Hello there, I'm Brittany and I work as a financial advisor in Los Angeles. I made this website (with the help of my husband) to provide some useful personal finance tips for those who need it. I hope you'll make good use of it ...
Why spending less than you make is the one money tip that can save everyone!
It should seem pretty obvious that you can't afford to spend more money than you make. However there are a surprisingly large number of people who do just that. Clearly doing that for any length of time is going to lead to some serious problems down the road. It is important to make sure that you get your spending under control so that you are spending less than you make. A helpful way to achieve this is to make use of a good spending plan.
The reasons that you would want to spend less money than you make should be pretty obvious. Unfortunately this is something that a surprising number of people are unable to do. The biggest problem with spending more than you make is that it means you have to borrow money in order to pay your expenses. The result is that most people wind up with a debt problem. Obviously if you are continuing to spend more than you make the debt problem is just going to get worse and worse since you will have no extra money to pay it off.
The problem with being too deeply in debt is the interest that you have to pay on it. In most cases when people are spending more than they make the debt that they rack up is credit card debt. This of course comes with extremely high interest rates. Those high interest rates result in a huge increase in your debt that in many cases will become unmanageable. That means that you have to spend more and more each month just to service your debt which usually results you racking up even more debt.
The other big problem with spending more than you make is that it means that you will have no savings. It is critically important that you have money put away for a rainy day. In the event something happens like losing your job you are going to want to have some extra money to tide you over. Of course the even bigger issue when it comes to savings is making sure that you have money available to retire. Most people don't have anywhere near enough savings to retire which is going to lead to serious problems down the road.
Given that most people know that they really can't afford to spend more than they make it does raise the question of why so many people do it. One reason is that because it is just so easy to get credit. Another reason is that many people want to live a lifestyle that they can't actually afford. In most cases it is fairly easy to get your spending under control. It would surprise you just how much those daily expenses like your morning coffee add up to. With just a few simple changes most people will find that they are able to get their spending to a level that will allow them to save some money every month.
