Five Tips for Choosing the Perfect Credit Card
Most people don't put nearly as much thought into choosing a credit card as they should. Having the wrong credit card can cost you a lot of money and in many cases can lead to severe financial difficulties. There is a lot more to choosing a credit card than filling out the application that shows up in the mail. You should not just apply for every credit card that you are offered. Be sure to inform yourself about the different types of credit cards you could choose. You need to think about your needs to make sure that you get the perfect credit card for you.
1. The interest rate is the most important thing when you are choosing a credit card. You have to make sure that you are getting the best rate possible. Do not get distracted by anything else, the interest rate is critical. Only when you are comparing cards that offer the same interest rate should you start looking at other features. Having the lowest interest rate possible will save you a lot of money.
2. When you are looking at the interest rate you have to make sure that you are looking at the real interest rate. Most credit cards offer a low introductory rate; this can be great thing to save you money, but not if the regular rate is too high. Don't take a card with a low introductory rate if the regular rate is higher than the rate you would pay with a different card.
3. It is important to look that any fees that come with the card. Many cards have no fee however there are others that may have a monthly fee. Ideally you should be looking for the card that has the lowest fee. However there are times that it might make sense to pay a fee. This is especially true if paying the fee will allow you to get a card that offers a lower interest rate.
4. A lot of cards these days offer rewards programs; these can be a great way to get the most out of the card. However you do have to make sure that the reward is something that you are actually going to use. There is little value in getting a card that rewards you with air miles if you have no plans to travel. Again do not take a card that has a higher interest rate just because they offer better rewards.
5. One important tip when you are choosing the perfect credit card is to look at the credit limit they are prepared to offer you. Most people naturally chose the card that offers the highest credit limit. This is not always a good idea, too much credit can hurt your credit rating, and it can also get you into financial trouble. That being said you do need to choose a card that will have a high enough credit limit to meet your needs.
